"Artikel ini menggali isu-isu feminisme dalam salah satu novel Neil Gaiman yang berjudul Coraline melalui tokoh ibu 'yang lain.' Coraline menggambarkan ibunya 'yang lain' sebagai seorang ibu feminim yang sempurna dengan segala bentuk karakteristik feminim yang terbawa padanya – mengayomi dan peduli dalam proses menjadi seorang ibu. Walaupun begitu, di bagian lain dalam novel Coraline, ibu 'yang lain' digambarkan sebagai seorang ibu yang berkuasa penuh (all-powerful mother), dengan kekuatan yang tak terbatas dan kekuasaan penuh atas Coraline di dunia 'yang lain.' Dia berubah menjadi seorang penyihir perempuan – sebuah penggambaran perempuan yang tipikal dalam feminisme. Karena dua figur yang sangat kontrak ketika menggambarkan karakter ibu 'yang lain,' artikel ini ingin mencari penyebab-penyebab dari titik balik ibu 'yang lain' dan pengaruh keberadaan Coraline terhadap ibu 'yang lain.' Dengan menggunakan teori milik Nancy J. Chodorow tentang 'all-powerful mothers,' artikel ini mendekonstruksikan perilaku-perilaku ibu 'yang lain' terhadap Coraline untuk menjawab pokok permasalahan.

This paper examines feminism issues within Neil Gaiman's Coraline through the 'other' mother character. Coraline portrays the 'other' mother as a perfect feminine mother with all sorts of feminine characteristics attached to her – nurturing and caring in mothering process. However, in another part of Coraline, she is portrayed as an all-powerful mother with unlimited power and dominance over Coraline in the 'other' world; and she turns into a female witch – a very typical feminine depiction. Due to the contrasting figures depicted within the 'other' mother character, this paper wants to seek for the causes of the 'other' mother's turning point and the influence of Coraline existence towards the 'other' mother. By using Nancy J. Chodorow's theory of 'all-powerful mothers,' this paper deconstructs the 'other' mother traits towards Coraline to answer the research question."

"Konsep ibu ideal di Jepang yang disebut ryousai kenbo (istri yang baik, ibu yang bijak) direproduksi pada masa pasca-perang dengan nama sengyou shufu (ibu rumah tangga penuh waktu) dan kyouiku mama (ibu pendidikan). Krisis ekonomi pada tahun 90an di Jepang menyebabkan tergoncangnya nilai-nilai yang terinternalisasi di masyarakat, termasuk di dalamnya nilai-nilai standar ibu ideal. Setelah masa lost decade, masyarakat Jepang mulai mempertanyakan nilai-nilai ibu ideal tersebut. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana tokoh-tokoh ibu di dalam novel Kokuhaku ini dikonstruksikan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif analisis. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa ketiga tokoh ibu memiliki kesamaan yaitu telah berusaha untuk dapat memenuhi nilai-nilai standar ibu ideal di masyarakat namun berakhir gagal memenuhi nilai-nilai standar ibu ideal. Novel Kokuhaku yang terbit pada tahun 2008 ini menyajikan kritik terhadap internalisasi nilai-nilai ibu ideal dalam masyarakat Jepang.

The concept of ideal mother in Japan called ryousai kenbo (good wife, wise mother) was reproduced in the post-war era with the name sengyou shufu (full-time housewife) and kyouiku mama (education mother). The economic crisis in the 90s in Japan had shaken the internalized values in society, including the ideal mothers values. After the lost decade era, Japanese people began to question the values of the ideal mother.

The purpose of this research is to find out how the characters of the mother in Kokuhaku novel were constructed. The research method used is analysis descriptive. The result of this research has shown that the three characters of the mother in the novel have some things in common, they tried to fulfill the ideal mothers standard values in society but ended up failing in fulfilling the ideal mothers standard values. The Kokuhaku novel published in 2008 presents a critique of the internalization of the ideal mothers values in Japanese society."
